K-pop sensation BTS is facing criticism from a faction of their fanbase following the appearance of two members, J-Hope and RM, alongside controversial American artist Chris Brown at his Toronto concert. The duo was spotted at the show, which was a co-headlining event with Usher, held at Rogers Stadium. BTS is set to perform at the same venue on August 22 and 23.
In a snapshot shared on Brown’s Instagram, J-Hope and RM were seen in a photo with the singer, and videos circulating on social media showed them enjoying the performance. Brown, known for his legal issues, has a criminal past dating back to 2009 when he admitted to assaulting his then-girlfriend, singer Rihanna. Subsequent assault charges led to his incarceration in 2014, and more recently, he pleaded guilty to assaulting a producer in a London nightclub.
The online reaction from BTS’s ARMY, their loyal fanbase, has been mixed. While some expressed disappointment in the members for associating with Brown, others defended J-Hope and RM. Speculation arose about their intentions at the concert, with supporters highlighting that they may have attended to see Usher rather than being aware of Brown’s controversial history.
Amidst the debate, various social media users emphasized the importance of not rushing to judgment, acknowledging the severity of Brown’s past actions while cautioning against attacking individual character based on a single event. BTS’s management team has not yet responded to requests for comments on the matter.
