Canadian filmmaker Matt Johnson appeared relaxed and casual just days before his upcoming wedding and before commencing shooting for his new movie. Johnson, donned in a T-shirt and sweatpants, visited Toronto’s Revue Cinema to discuss “Tony,” a biopic centered on the early life of renowned chef and TV personality Anthony Bourdain. Despite Bourdain’s iconic status following his tragic passing in 2018, Johnson expressed comfort in portraying his story.
Initially not planning to create a film on Bourdain, Johnson’s perspective shifted after meeting actor Dominic Sessa, who portrays the lead role in the movie. The duo found common ground in exploring themes such as role models and personal struggles, prompting Johnson to delve into Bourdain’s formative years chronicled in his book “Kitchen Confidential.”
By focusing on Bourdain’s youth and the complexities he faced, Johnson aimed to sidestep the weight of depicting the older, established Bourdain. This approach allowed for a more relatable narrative, addressing pivotal moments in Bourdain’s early culinary journey and personal growth. “Tony” is set to premiere in theaters across Canada on August 14.
Sessa, playing a young Bourdain, is depicted learning under the guidance of a chef in Provincetown, portrayed by Antonio Banderas in the film. Johnson emphasized the collaborative essence of the project, aligning with Bourdain’s essence to create a compelling portrayal.
