Brighton & Hove Albion has secured the signing of Canadian striker Promise David for the upcoming Premier League season on a loan deal from Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium. The agreement entails an obligation to purchase David for a reported fee of $29.7 million US contingent upon meeting specific undisclosed conditions.
Union Saint-Gilloise confirmed that David will make the transition to the Premier League starting from the next season for a record fee for the Belgian club. The 25-year-old forward arrives at Brighton after a successful stint at Union, where he tallied 41 goals in 82 matches and contributed to the club’s first league title in 90 years in 2025. He extended his contract with the club through June 2029 last year.
Having represented Canada at the recent World Cup, David scored one goal during limited playing time off the bench due to a hip injury. He has notched four goals in 14 appearances for the Canadian national team. Born in Brampton, Ontario, to Nigerian parents, David initially debuted for Nigeria’s under-23 team in October 2022. However, following discussions with Canada’s coach Jesse Marsch, FIFA approved his request to switch allegiances in February 2025.
Brighton marks the latest chapter in David’s diverse career, having previously played professionally in Croatia, Malta, and Estonia before his move to Belgium in July 2024. Brighton’s sporting director, Mike Cave, emphasized David’s striking abilities, international experience, and European competition background as valuable assets for the team’s upcoming season, with David entering his peak playing years at 25.
The English club, a fixture in the Premier League for nine consecutive seasons, concluded the previous season in eighth place in the league standings.
