Legendary ZZ Top Drummer Frank Beard Dies at 77

Frank Beard, the renowned drummer of the Texas boogie-rock band ZZ Top, known for his contributions to hit songs such as “Sharp Dressed Man,” “Legs,” and “Gimme All Your Lovin’,” has passed away at the age of 77. His death occurred while under hospice care at his ranch in Richmond, Texas, surrounded by his family, as confirmed by publicist Bob Merlis. Band co-founder and guitarist Billy Gibbons, currently on tour with bassist Elwood Francis, paid tribute to Beard, referring to him as a significant and innovative drummer and a proud Texan. Gibbons emphasized the importance of Beard’s unique drumming style in maintaining ZZ Top’s success and expressed the band’s commitment to continue as Beard had desired.

With over 50 million records sold, ZZ Top boasted six singles that topped Billboard’s Mainstream Rock Airplay chart. Additionally, the band had seven albums in the Top 10 of the Billboard 200 chart and received three Grammy Award nominations. Reflecting on his musical journey in the 2019 documentary “ZZ Top: That Little Ol’ Band from Texas,” Beard expressed his contentment in finding his musical counterparts, emphasizing his unwavering passion for playing and dedication to the band.

Throughout his six-decade tenure with ZZ Top, Beard played alongside Dusty Hill and Billy Gibbons, showcasing his talent at events like the 2016 Glastonbury Festival in England.
