Canada’s women’s wheelchair basketball team secured their second win at the world championships held in Ottawa by defeating Australia 79-30 at Carleton University. Kady Dandeneau from Pender Island, B.C., led the team with 33 points, six assists, and 12 rebounds, while Arinn Young from St. Albert, Alta., contributed 20 points and 14 rebounds. The veteran duo’s strong performance helped Canada to a 2-0 record in the 12-country women’s bracket.
Canada dominated from the start, establishing a 17-10 lead in the first quarter, which proved to be the closest Australia would come in the one-sided match. The team finished strong with a 25-4 run in the fourth quarter. Canada shot 51% from the field and 50% from beyond the arc.
In their opening game on Wednesday, the Canadian women defeated Spain 76-51 at TD Place. Their next challenge will be against China at TD Place on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Canadian men’s team also started their campaign with a win, beating Morocco 74-51. They will face Germany at Carleton University on Friday at 12 p.m. ET.
