Former NHL standout P.K. Subban is poised to take on a leading role in addition to being an executive producer for an upcoming animated series based on the popular Screech Owls franchise. The collaboration between Shaftesbury production company, Sphere Animation studio, NHL, and Boat Rocker Studios was officially unveiled in a recent press release.
Inspired by the works of Canadian author Roy MacGregor and the 2001 live-action series of the same title, Screech Owls is scheduled to debut in the fall of 2027 on CBC, followed by a winter 2028 release in French on Radio-Canada and TFO (Télévision française de l’Ontario).
The narrative of Screech Owls revolves around a squad of hockey players unraveling mysteries under the guidance of Coach P.K., emphasizing themes of camaraderie and collaboration. The upcoming series will consist of 26 episodes, each lasting 11 minutes.
Hailing from Toronto, Subban is a retired professional ice hockey defenseman, having enjoyed a successful 13-season career in the NHL with the Montreal Canadiens, Nashville Predators, and New Jersey Devils.
Expressing his excitement for the project, Subban stated, “A significant aspect of my career has been seeking innovative ways to expand the sport’s reach and engage diverse young audiences. Screech Owls, a cherished series from my youth, achieves both goals.”
The animated adaptation will be scripted by John May and Suzanne Bloch, the original creators of the live-action Screech Owls, with Sarah Nurse from PWHL and Team Canada making a guest appearance as herself in the show.
Marie McCann, the senior director of children’s content at CBC Kids, praised the series, remarking, “This delightful series offers children a blend of friendship, teamwork, and sports in a heartwarming animated Canadian setting.”
Collaborating with P.K. Subban on this modern interpretation of the beloved Canadian books is a privilege that is expected to captivate a new generation of young viewers with its intriguing mix of hockey and mystery.
