Anthony Joshua, the British heavyweight boxing star, has reportedly suffered more severe injuries than initially believed following a harrowing car accident in Nigeria. The tragic incident occurred on Monday along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway near Lagos when a black Lexus Jeep collided with a stationary red commercial Sinotruck. While Joshua sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized, the crash resulted in the loss of his close friends, Kevin Ayodele and Sina Ghami.
The Federal Road Safety Corps of Nigeria promptly released preliminary findings, revealing that the crash involved the two vehicles and a total of five adult males. Two individuals lost their lives, one was injured, and two escaped unharmed. Joshua, who sustained minor injuries, was rescued alive. The injured victim received medical attention, and the deceased were taken to the Livewell Morgue for further procedures by the Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division (MTD).
Although initial reports indicated Joshua’s injuries were minor, concerns have been raised about the extent of his injuries. Sources close to the former heavyweight champion fear the possibility of more severe damage, including rib and knee injuries. A video circulating on social media showed Joshua playing table tennis with Ayodele shortly before the accident, highlighting the tragic turn of events.
Following the accident, an outpouring of condolences flooded in, with Eddie Hearn, Joshua’s promoter, leading the tributes. Matchroom Boxing confirmed the passing of personal trainer Latz and strength and conditioning coach Ghami in a statement. Joshua, who sustained injuries in the crash, is in stable condition and under observation at the hospital. The statement requested privacy for the affected families and friends during this difficult time.
