Beloved Gluten-Free Café and B&B Closes Amid Industry Struggles

Published:

An acclaimed B&B and café has shut down, dealing a significant blow to the local community. The owner attributed the closure to the establishment’s challenging location, which resulted in a lack of foot traffic.

The Dove Inn, a gluten-free café and B&B located in Alburgh, Norfolk, ceased operations on Friday after operating for two and a half years. Owner Sonya Resemblance expressed her gratitude for the support received from the community during their time of operation.

This closure adds to the ongoing struggles faced by pubs and hospitality businesses across Britain. The industry has witnessed numerous closures annually due to escalating expenses and evolving consumer habits, leading to internal challenges within the sector.

In a similar vein, the White Horse on London End in Beaconsfield recently closed permanently. Pub owners had previously cautioned about the industry’s viability, citing substantial cost increases. The closure of 300 pubs in the initial quarter of 2025 further underscored the sector’s challenges.

Despite being recognized as one of the top 50 cafés in the UK at the 2025 Small Business Awards shortly before shutting down, the Dove Inn faced insurmountable obstacles. Sonya Resemblance, who took over the business in July 2023, was known for offering gluten-free dining options, catering to individuals with dietary restrictions.

In a heartfelt message announcing the closure, Sonya emphasized the positive impact the business had on the community, providing employment opportunities and fostering social connections that contributed to mental well-being. However, she acknowledged the difficulty of sustaining the business in its current location and expressed regret over the outcome.

The business had previously raised concerns about the challenges posed by the retail and hospitality environment. Despite efforts to weather the storm, the closure became inevitable, prompting an outpouring of support from loyal customers who cherished the establishment.

Amid messages of sympathy and hope for a potential return in the future, Sonya confirmed the closure on Friday, January 16. The community’s overwhelming support serves as a testament to the impact the Dove Inn had on its patrons and the local area.
