The Ogun and Lagos State Governments have issued a joint statement regarding the car accident involving Anthony Joshua in Nigeria on Monday. The former heavyweight champion sustained minor injuries in a fatal collision that resulted in the deaths of two individuals.
Following the incident, both the Ogun and Lagos State Governments officially confirmed that Anthony Joshua, the British-Nigerian two-time unified world heavyweight boxing champion, was part of a team of four involved in a road traffic accident on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The collision occurred when their vehicle collided with a stationary truck, leading to the tragic fatalities. The governments expressed their deepest condolences to the families of the deceased and prayed for their strength during this challenging time.
Anthony Joshua and another passenger were promptly taken to a specialized medical facility in Lagos for evaluation. After thorough medical assessments, doctors determined that both individuals are in stable condition and do not require immediate medical intervention. A dedicated medical team is overseeing their care, with Anthony Joshua conscious and in contact with his family.
Both the Ogun and Lagos State Governments are closely monitoring the situation to ensure the affected individuals receive top-notch medical treatment. Simultaneously, investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident have begun. The governments have requested privacy for Anthony Joshua and his family while appreciating the public’s concern.
The statement was co-signed by Kayode Akinmade, Special Adviser on Media to the Governor of Ogun State, and Gbenga Omotoso, Commissioner for Information and Strategy for Lagos State.
During the incident, Joshua was traveling in a black Lexus Jeep that collided with a stationary lorry on the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The Federal Road Safety Corps of Nigeria reported that the collision involved a black Lexus Jeep and a parked red commercial Sinotruck. Out of the five adult males involved, two lost their lives, one was injured, and two escaped unharmed. Anthony Joshua survived with minor injuries.
The injured victim received medical attention, while the deceased were taken to Livewell Morgue, Ajaka, Sagamu. The Nigeria Police Motor Traffic Division was informed for further investigation and documentation. Initial findings suggest that the Lexus Jeep, potentially exceeding the speed limit, lost control during an overtaking maneuver and collided with the stationary truck by the roadside.
