Ericsson Secures Victory at Ontario Honda Dealers Indy

Published:

Marcus Ericsson claimed victory at the first-ever Ontario Honda Dealers Indy in Markham with strategic passes during the race.

Ericsson’s decisive move came late in the competition when he overtook teammate Will Power despite a slight bump between the two. With only four laps remaining on the Markham street circuit, Ericsson successfully passed Romain Grosjean to secure his fifth career win in the IndyCar series.

Expressing his satisfaction, Ericsson attributed his victory to the exceptional speed of his car and the team’s tactical gameplay. This win marks his first triumph since the 2023 Grand Prix of St. Petersburg.

Romain Grosjean finished in second place, achieving his first top-five finish this season. Will Power secured the third spot, while Alex Palou, the current driver rankings leader, crossed the finish line in fourth place.

Notably, Ericsson, Power, and Kyle Kirkwood, who holds the second position in the driver rankings, are all teammates under the Andretti Global banner.

Sweden’s Marcus Ericsson took the win Sunday at the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy at Markham. The racing event has a five year deal to stay in the city after moving from its longtime home at Toronto’s Exhibition Place. CBC’s Mercedes Gaztambide has more.

Following Kirkwood’s crash on the 53rd lap, the Andretti Global team shifted their focus to preventing Palou from scoring more points and securing his fifth IndyCar title.

Team principal Ron Ruzewski emphasized the strategic decision to challenge Palou and limit his advantage, ensuring Kirkwood remains in contention for the championship.

However, a miscommunication led to a brief incident between Power and Ericsson during the race, affecting their positions momentarily.

A total of 32 points were awarded to Palou, while Kirkwood earned nine points before retiring early from the race. Palou currently leads Kirkwood by 133 points in the standings.

In his pursuit of victory, Ericsson successfully overtook Grosjean, who has yet to secure an IndyCar win since transitioning from Formula One in 2021. Grosjean’s worn-out tires and fuel limitations made it challenging for him to defend against Ericsson’s advances.

Reflecting on the tough competition, Ericsson acknowledged the difficulty of passing Grosjean due to the narrow track and uncertain defensive strategies.

Louis Foster, who secured pole position in practice and qualifying, predicted pre-race chaos on the challenging 3.52-kilometre road course in downtown Markham.

Unfortunately, Foster’s prediction came true as he crashed on the 43rd lap, leading to multiple caution periods and several cars retiring from the race due to collisions.

The Ontario Honda Dealers Indy marked the first year of the event in Markham after relocating from Toronto’s Exhibition Place. Despite initial challenges with track completion and safety checks, the event garnered positive feedback from drivers and fans alike.

Ericsson expressed optimism for the future, anticipating smoother operations in the upcoming races at the newly introduced track in Markham.
