Marie-Yasmine Alidou netted the decisive goal from a penalty kick in the 55th minute, leading the Montreal Roses to a 2-0 victory over AFC Toronto in Northern Super League action on Sunday. Elyse Bennett contributed her ninth goal of the season to secure the win for the Roses (9-4-3), who were under the guidance of interim head coach Maryse Bard-Martel for the first time.
Although Shelina Zadorsky seemed to equalize for Toronto (7-5-4) in the 68th minute, her goal was disallowed due to an offside ruling. Roses’ goalkeeper Anna Karpenko made crucial saves, facing a total of 20 shots, with nine on target, to preserve the clean sheet.
On the opposing side, Toronto’s goalkeeper Sabrina D’Angelo encountered seven shots, five of which were on target. This match marked the Roses’ first game following the dismissal of head coach Robert Rositoiu after suffering a surprising 1-0 defeat against semi-pro team Simcoe County in the W Canadian Championship.
