Prime suspect in the Madeleine McCann case, Christian Brueckner, hinted at his potential relocation in a GoFundMe plea. The convicted rapist sought financial aid to depart from Germany, managing to collect €100 (£87.92) within a brief three-hour period on the platform before the campaign was removed.
Before the fundraiser’s removal, Brueckner outlined his reasons for seeking donations and disclosed his plan to move away from Germany. He boasted about his notoriety in Germany, claiming even the police addressed him informally. Brueckner requested €50 (£49.96) contributions to facilitate his relocation to a country lacking an extradition agreement with Germany’s Federal Criminal Police Office, ensuring his avoidance of repatriation due to political or economic tensions.
In his GoFundMe post, Brueckner expressed his desire for a lawful departure from Germany to escape constant scrutiny, prejudice, and persecution, seeking financial assistance for a fresh start. He suggested that with €500, he could secure accommodation unregistered with the Braunscweig public prosecutor’s office, indicating a potential move to a country without extradition agreements, such as Suriname in South America.
Previously incarcerated for the rape of a 72-year-old American pensioner in Portugal’s Algarve region, where Madeleine McCann disappeared, Brueckner had been receiving unemployment benefits after his release earlier this year. Despite wearing an electronic ankle tag for monitoring purposes, a German court mandated his continued use of the device for the next five years, though its effectiveness would be limited in a non-European Union country.
Brueckner’s lawyer suggested his client should consider relocating to a non-extradition state like Suriname to evade European or UK repatriation. Fluent in English and Portuguese, Brueckner sought a haven where he could live freely without the looming threat of extradition. Potential countries without extradition treaties with the UK included the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Cuba, and Vietnam, while the list for Germany encompassed the Maldives, Montenegro, Indonesia, and Morocco, although his ultimate destination remained uncertain.
