Markham is gearing up for some exciting motorsport action as it prepares to host the NTT IndyCar Series, including the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy this weekend. While IndyCar has a history in Toronto, this event marks the first time the race will be held outside the city on a brand-new track layout.
The 3.52-kilometre, 12-turn course will wind through various locations, including the Unionville GO station grounds, York University Markham Campus, and the Markham Pan Am Centre.
For those planning to attend the Ontario Honda Dealers Indy, utilizing GO Transit, York Region Transit, or driving via Highway 407 is recommended. Ample parking will be available west of the event grounds, with expanded Stouffville Line service by Metrolinx to facilitate transportation.
Residents have endured months of track construction impacts, with road closures affecting parts of Enterprise Boulevard, Kennedy Road, YMCA Boulevard, University Boulevard, and South Unionville Boulevard until Monday at 6 a.m.
The main event on Sunday features IndyCar racing, with Spanish driver Alex Palou leading the points and expected to perform well. Other contenders to watch include Pato O’Ward, Kyle Kirkwood, David Malukas, Christian Lundgaard, and Rinus Veekay. Local talent will also shine in support series races.
Drivers are adapting to the new Markham track layout, which offers a smoother surface compared to Toronto’s bumpy roads. Various racers have expressed excitement and curiosity about the track’s unique features and challenges.
Tickets for the event are available for Saturday and Sunday, with Friday’s practice and qualifying sessions open to the public for free as part of Fan Friday. Attendees are encouraged to consider donations to Make-A-Wish Canada when attending the event.
