“NHL Veteran Rich Pilon Dives into Horse-Driving for Children’s Mental Health”

Published:

Rich Pilon, a former NHL defenseman, has found a new passion in horse-driving that resonates with his love for hockey. Pilon, known for his time with the New York Islanders, New York Rangers, and St. Louis Blues in the ’80s and ’90s, launched “Horses & Hockey — Let’s Talk” in 2022 to support children’s mental health through horse-drawn wagon events.

Recently, on Dec. 5, 2023, Pilon applied for a business license in Saskatoon to offer horse-drawn carriage rides. Following a successful pilot project, the city’s transportation committee unanimously approved a regulatory framework for horse-drawn vehicles, set for a city council vote.

These rides, a hit among kids, have been featured at various events, including Back to Batoche Days and Sikh community celebrations. Pilon, who has been around horses since he was four, emphasized his commitment to the well-being of his animals, ensuring their outings do not exceed three hours.

The proposed regulations in Saskatoon, overseen by Jay Magus, the city’s transportation director, include mandates such as possessing a Class 5 driver’s license, adhering to traffic laws, accommodating cyclists, and maintaining cleanliness. Pilon stressed the importance of avoiding busy streets during horse-driving to ensure both safety and enjoyment for riders.

While some Canadian cities have faced opposition regarding horse welfare concerns, Pilon’s emphasis on caring for his horses by limiting their work hours reflects his dedication. A city report highlighted other western Canadian cities like Winnipeg, Regina, Calgary, Edmonton, Vancouver, and Victoria that allow horse-drawn vehicles.
