Last night, emergency responders rushed to Scarborough Beach following an incident where two teenagers sustained injuries from fireworks. The youths, both 18 years old, were reportedly handling the fireworks when they detonated. One teen suffered hand injuries while the other had facial injuries, as reported by North Yorkshire Police. An Air Ambulance was dispatched to the scene in Yorkshire, and the injured teenagers were swiftly transported to James’ Cook University Hospital in Middlesborough for medical care.
The fireworks display was said to be unauthorized, leading to challenges for emergency services to reach the scene due to road congestion. A witness suggested that street closures to cars during such events could aid emergency access.
Social media images depicted young individuals gathered around a bonfire near the RNLI station on the seafront. Additionally, a video circulated showing a person carrying a lit firework which exploded unexpectedly, resulting in injuries.
The Yorkshire Ambulance Service confirmed receiving an emergency call at 7:13 pm reporting the incident at Scarborough Beach, dispatching multiple ambulance units, including the air ambulance, to transport two patients to the hospital.
Another observer described the atmosphere in Scarborough as chaotic, prompting them to leave the area due to the noise and reports of serious injuries to teenagers at the beach bonfires. Calls were made for North Yorkshire Council and the Police to take action and shut down such events.
A local Facebook page, Scarborough Moan, with a significant following, shared that children had been seriously injured, disabling comments to prevent the spread of unverified information.
North Yorkshire Police are seeking witnesses to provide information regarding the incident. Authorities disclosed that two 18-year-old teenagers sustained injuries from fireworks, with one injured in the face and the other in the hand. The beach area was cleared for the air ambulance but later reopened after the injured teenagers were taken to the hospital by land ambulance. Investigations are ongoing, and the police urge anyone present during the incident to come forward if they have not already provided information.
