“‘The Odyssey’ Hits $1.1B, Tops Nolan’s Box Office Record”

Published:

“The Odyssey” continues to dominate the box office, raking in $1.1 billion US since its release on July 17, as reported by The Associated Press. This Greek epic adaptation marks director Christopher Nolan’s highest-grossing film to date, surpassing his previous hits like “The Dark Knight Rises” and “The Dark Knight.”

In comparison, “The Dark Knight Rises” earned $1.08 billion US, while “The Dark Knight” reached $1 billion US. Nolan’s 2024 biopic, “Oppenheimer,” fell just short of the billion-dollar mark with around $975 million US in earnings.

Another film making waves is Sony-Marvel’s “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” which exceeded expectations with a global earning of $1.67 billion US after debuting with $360 million US in its opening weekend. This achievement places it among the highest-grossing movies of all time, breaking records previously held by Marvel movies like “Avengers: Endgame.”

“Brand New Day” is now the second-fastest movie to hit $1 billion US, trailing behind “Endgame.” It currently leads as the highest-grossing film of the year, surpassing “Toy Story 5.”

Despite its success, “The Odyssey” is yet to release in the lucrative Chinese market, with a grand rollout planned on 800 Imax screens. The anticipation for the film in China is high, with Imax China’s CEO expecting a significant demand.

The appeal of Imax technology has contributed to the success of these films globally. Imax, known for its immersive experience, has gained popularity in Hollywood and around the world, with only a limited number of theaters equipped to showcase films in Imax 70mm format.

Nolan’s close ties to Imax led to “The Odyssey” being the first movie entirely filmed in Imax format, further solidifying its success. The collaboration between “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” and “The Odyssey” has contributed to a resurgence in Hollywood’s box office revenue, marking a strong recovery since the pandemic. Ticket sales are up, with five movies surpassing $1 billion US in earnings this year.

Analysts predict that summer theatrical revenue will hit $4 billion US, signaling a thriving season for the industry. The last summer to exceed this mark was in 2023, driven by hits like “Barbie” and “Oppenheimer.”
