“Training Exercise Reveals Finland’s Tactics Against Russian Shadow Fleet”

Published:

Observing from the deck of a Finnish patrol ship, I witnessed armed individuals descending from a helicopter and commencing an assault on the vessel.

The masked security personnel swiftly moved to the ship’s control center, vociferously asserting their authority. Fortunately, the scenario was part of a training exercise conducted by the Finnish Border Guard, responsible for safeguarding an 830-mile boundary along NATO’s eastern frontier against Russia. This force actively engages with vessels suspected of interfering with crucial undersea cables in the Gulf of Finland.

Demonstrating how they would secure a suspicious vessel, camouflaged operatives showcased their tactics to Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper during her recent visit to Finland and Norway. The proximity to Russia felt pronounced as we embarked on the Turva, an offshore patrol ship in Helsinki, overlooking the Gulf of Finland, extending towards St Petersburg in the Baltic Sea.

Given Russia’s close proximity, Finland grapples with Putin’s subversion strategies and hybrid warfare. The visit of Ms. Cooper underscores the menace posed by the Russian shadow fleet to the UK.

During our discussion, Ms. Cooper emphasized the imperative for decisive measures against a network of aging oil tankers operating under questionable flags. These vessels not only assist in financing Putin’s unlawful activities in Ukraine by circumventing Western sanctions but also face allegations of disrupting critical undersea infrastructure carrying telecommunications data and essential energy supplies.

Reports suggest the UK is exploring the legality of using military intervention to board these vessels, following its recent involvement in a high-stakes operation alongside US special forces targeting a tanker linked to Russia. The escalating tensions over the Arctic region coincide with the Foreign Secretary’s visit.

The intensifying impact of climate change on sea temperatures has triggered geopolitical tensions as new maritime routes emerge and natural resources become accessible due to melting ice. The geopolitical significance of Greenland, particularly amid Donald Trump’s annexation threats, has elevated the issue globally.

Britain aims to demonstrate its role in shaping security measures in the Arctic region alongside NATO allies, emphasizing its commitment to the High North. However, potential disruptions loom if the US President follows through on his declarations.
