Shabana Mahmood is preparing to announce significant changes to the immigration regulations in the UK, taking inspiration from Denmark’s approach. The Home Secretary reportedly sent officials to Denmark to study their strict border control and asylum policies, known for being some of the most rigorous in Europe.
Denmark’s policies on family reunions and temporary stays for certain refugees are under scrutiny for potential adoption in the UK. These measures have led to a notable decrease in asylum applications to a four-decade low and a high success rate in deporting 95% of rejected asylum seekers. There is a division among Labour MPs regarding this move, with some backing stricter measures to counter Reform UK while others fear losing support to the Greens and Liberal Democrats.
Ms. Mahmood aims to deter unauthorized entry into the UK while streamlining the process of deporting individuals without the right to remain in the country. She is eager to meet with Denmark’s immigration minister, Rasmus Stoklund, to discuss further collaboration.
Mr. Stoklund has likened Danish society to the peaceful and harmonious hobbits in “The Lord of the Rings,” emphasizing the expectation for immigrants to positively contribute and integrate into society. Labour MP Gareth Snell expressed openness to exploring changes that enhance fairness in the asylum system, citing the need to restore trust among constituents.
While some see value in adopting successful strategies from other countries to manage immigration effectively, Nottingham East MP Nadia Whittome cautioned against adopting the Danish model, labeling it as aligned with far-right ideologies. The ongoing influx of migrants crossing the Channel to Britain remains a pressing issue, with 648 migrants arriving in nine boats on Friday, as per Home Office data, bringing the total for the year to 38,223.
