The labor union representing WestJet cabin crew has revealed specifics of the recently agreed-upon contract with the Calgary-based airline following a brief strike. The Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) disclosed that the deal entails an increase of over 18% in wages spread across three years. Additionally, a new “duty period premium” has been introduced to provide extra compensation for ground duties. Other notable inclusions are extended time off allowances and enhanced provisions for food and uniform expenses.
Activities of WestJet flights in most parts of Canada were halted during a prolonged holiday weekend as the deadline approached for a strike by 4,400 flight attendants who commenced the strike on Sunday. However, an agreement was reached between the airline and the union early Monday, leading to a gradual return to normal operations for WestJet.
The cabin crew members are scheduled to vote on the agreement over the next few weeks.
