WhatsApp Introduces Usernames for Privacy & Efficiency

Published:

WhatsApp is on track to address a major concern by introducing a new feature that encourages users to take action promptly. The current method of using the platform involves sharing phone numbers, which is not always convenient for users.

After a long wait, the Meta-owned app is finally addressing this issue by introducing unique usernames. This update will allow users to share their usernames instead of divulging their phone numbers.

According to WhatsApp, sharing phone numbers can be a significant step when connecting with new individuals, such as classmates, neighbors, event attendees, or group members. The introduction of usernames aims to provide users with more privacy in their interactions.

By reserving usernames before the full launch, users can secure their preferred usernames early. With billions of users on the platform, popular usernames may be taken quickly, making early reservations crucial to securing desired names.

To reserve a username, users must update WhatsApp to the latest version and navigate to Settings > Account > Username. The feature will be rolled out gradually over the upcoming months, with users being notified when usernames become available in their region.
