“Zelenskyy Pursues Energy Ceasefire Amid Diplomatic Talks”

Published:

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has engaged in discussions regarding a potential energy ceasefire with Russia, involving Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, Finnish President Alexander Stubb, and NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte. However, Zelenskyy awaits further details from the United States regarding this matter.

President Donald Trump recently mentioned on social media that both Ukraine and Russia had agreed to an “energy ceasefire,” without providing specific terms. Zelenskyy expressed surprise at Trump’s announcement, although a senior Ukrainian official mentioned to Reuters that Ukraine was prepared to agree to such a ceasefire if Russia also consented.

Zelenskyy took to social media to communicate that he had conversed with Carney, Stubb, and Rutte concerning the purported ceasefire reported by Trump. He emphasized Ukraine’s support for the ceasefire and stressed the importance of Russia’s backing. Zelenskyy underscored Ukraine’s commitment to de-escalation, safeguarding lives, and making decisions to end the conflict and ensure lasting peace.

The announcement followed Trump’s criticism of Zelenskyy for alleged attacks on Russian diesel facilities, contributing to a global shortage. Both Russia and Ukraine have targeted each other’s energy infrastructure throughout the conflict.

Trump’s brief social media post declared the immediate implementation of the ceasefire, urging both sides to uphold the agreement. The White House did not provide immediate clarification on Trump’s post, and the Kremlin refrained from commenting.

Zelenskyy reiterated Ukraine’s readiness to cease attacks on Russian refineries, contingent upon Moscow halting strikes on Ukrainian power facilities. Zelenskyy insisted on substantial guarantees for any potential agreement, emphasizing Russia’s responsibility for the conflict.

In response to Trump’s call for new leadership in Ukraine, Zelenskyy proposed organizing elections if Putin agreed to a 60-day ceasefire. Zelenskyy emphasized the need to end hostilities before electoral processes could proceed, citing legal restrictions on holding elections during martial law.

Zelenskyy dismissed blame for rising energy prices, attributing the situation primarily to the Middle East conflict. The surge in global diesel prices, linked to the Iran war, has become a political challenge for Trump’s Republican Party ahead of upcoming elections.

Ukrainians in Kyiv expressed discontent over Trump’s suggestion of leadership change in Ukraine, particularly amid wartime circumstances. Zelenskyy planned to continue dialogues with European leaders and explore additional air defense support to counter Russian drones.

On the diplomatic front, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha is set to attend an EU foreign affairs council meeting to deliberate on enhancing sanctions against Russia and advancing discussions on Ukraine’s EU membership.
