Lando Norris was overcome with emotion as he clinched his first Formula 1 world championship title. The British driver secured third place at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, edging out Max Verstappen by a slim two-point margin to claim the prestigious victory.
Norris, now the 35th world champion in F1 history, expressed his gratitude and joy over the win after a period of uncertainty. “Thank you guys… oh my god,” he exclaimed over the McLaren team radio at the race’s conclusion. “You made my dreams come true, thank you so much. I love you guys, for everything. You deserve it. I love you mum, I love you dad. Thanks for everything. And now I’m crying!”
McLaren team principal Zak Brown praised the team’s effort, stating, “We did it, it wasn’t easy. Lando and Oscar, what a group of exceptional drivers!”
Despite facing a 12-point lead over Verstappen before the Abu Dhabi race, McLaren’s strategic mishap and Verstappen’s strong performance kept the competition intense. Verstappen, who won the last three races of the season, fell short of securing his fifth title as Norris maintained his championship charge.
Norris encountered a moment of concern during the Abu Dhabi race when his overtaking move on Yuki Tsunoda was investigated by race stewards for driving off the track. However, Norris avoided penalties, and Verstappen’s victory was not enough to derail his championship bid.
In the end, Verstappen finished first, followed by Oscar Piastri in second place, while Norris secured third place ahead of Charles Leclerc, sealing his championship victory in a thrilling season finale.
