A highly anticipated Halloween event known for its terrifying scare mazes has been abruptly canceled, leaving staff members in a financial predicament. Halloween Haunt Fest, originally scheduled to take place at the Hertfordshire County Showground from October 17 to November 1, was halted midway through its run.
Following the event’s sudden cancellation, individuals who were looking forward to participating were shocked to learn that the organizing company had gone into liquidation. Phoebe Shergold-Willis, who not only organized auditions for the event but also portrayed a zombie-like character named Ethel, expressed her disappointment at being owed approximately £1,600 for her contributions. She disclosed that none of the roughly 100 actors hired at £85 per day had received any payment, despite fulfilling their contractual obligations.
In an official statement released on October 29, CEO Nick Doherty of In the Scenes Ltd announced the company’s insolvency, leading to the termination of the Halloween Haunt Fest. The company cited unforeseen financial difficulties as the primary reason for the event’s premature closure. Plans are underway to appoint a licensed insolvency practitioner to handle the company’s affairs and address outstanding obligations, including compensating ticket holders.
The event’s cancellation not only affected the actors but also had a ripple effect on other service providers. Emma Rule, representing Sentry and K9, which supplied security teams for the event, expressed concern about the financial impact on her company and the need to cover staff wages from personal funds. Hertfordshire Agricultural Society, which owns the showground where the event took place, clarified that they were not involved in the organization of Halloween Haunt Fest or In the Scenes Ltd. They revealed they are owed a substantial sum for rental fees and empathized with all affected parties who have yet to receive payment.
As inquiries mount regarding the unexpected closure of Halloween Haunt Fest, the organizers have been urged to provide clarity and address the financial repercussions faced by staff and stakeholders.
