“UK Set to Retire Copper Phone Network for Digital Voice”

Published:

The UK is preparing for a significant upgrade to its communication network in January 2027. The country’s traditional copper phone network will be retired, making way for the new Digital Voice platform that utilizes broadband connections for calls instead of the old copper wiring.

Households need to take action as the switch to Digital Voice approaches. Failure to transition to the new service may result in the loss of existing landline connections.

A recent campaign, ‘Don’t Put Off the Switch,’ featuring Clare Balding, emphasized the importance of checking and preparing landlines for the upcoming digital transformation.

Clare Balding stressed the necessity of responding promptly to provider notifications to avoid service disruptions. Non-compliance could lead to interruptions in essential services.

Although the official deadline is six months away, the transition is gaining momentum. BT’s Openreach, responsible for the UK’s primary broadband network, has initiated “stop sell” actions at an additional 112 telephone exchanges.

This move prohibits broadband providers using the Openreach network, such as BT, Sky, Vodafone, and Plusnet, from selling or switching customers to older copper-based services in those areas.

According to Openreach, the “Stop Sell” initiative is triggered when at least 75% of connected premises have access to ultrafast Full Fibre. Customers in these areas must opt for the new digital services over the upgraded Full Fibre network for any changes or upgrades to their broadband or phone services.

The recent expansion brings the total number of exchanges under “Stop Sell” regulations to 1,572, covering approximately 15.4 million homes and businesses nationwide.

Despite potential challenges, the shift to full fibre and Digital Voice promises enhanced benefits such as faster internet speeds, improved connectivity, and a more contemporary phone service aligned with today’s digital landscape.

Individuals uncertain about the impact on their residence can use the Openreach postcode checker to determine available services.

James Lilley, the Managed Customer Migrations Director at Openreach, emphasized the importance of the “Stop Sell” initiative in driving the UK’s transition to advanced full fibre technologies. This shift aims to ensure a seamless migration to future-proof solutions as traditional copper services decline.

The upcoming switch-off of the legacy Public Switched Telephone Network in six months underscores the necessity for everyone to adopt digital phone lines.
