A recent report by consumer advocate Which? reveals that some of the major broadband providers in the UK are failing to meet customer expectations for reliable service. Smaller alternative networks, known as “alt-nets,” are surpassing the big brands by offering faster speeds, more reliable connections, and better value.
The study found that issues with internet connections, such as frequent dropouts, are widespread among broadband users. Slow download speeds and service outages are also common sources of frustration for consumers.
An overwhelming 91% of broadband customers reported experiencing problems with their internet service in the past year, indicating that only a small fraction of households enjoyed trouble-free connections.
Sky ranked poorly for frequent dropouts, with 38% of customers facing this issue, though the problems were promptly resolved. Meanwhile, Virgin Media performed inadequately, with 30% of users encountering regular connection dropouts despite paying high broadband bills.
Among dissatisfied customers, Sky users expressed dissatisfaction with slow broadband speeds. Other underperforming providers include TalkTalk and Sky’s NOW service.
On the positive side, smaller UK providers like Zen Internet, Community Fibre, and Hyperoptic continue to excel in customer satisfaction and reliability. Plusnet stood out among larger providers, outperforming rivals such as Vodafone, EE, BT, and Sky.
These findings align with previous research by Which?, consistently showing that smaller broadband companies excel in reliability, customer service, and value compared to major providers in the UK.
Which? recommends that households explore alternative providers in their area and consider switching if they are unhappy with their current service. The Ofcom broadband checker is a useful tool to identify available network options.
In response to the report, a Virgin Media spokesperson highlighted their ongoing investments to enhance services, citing official data from Ofcom and independent assessments that rank Virgin Media as a top performer across various broadband categories.
The report underscores the importance of good-quality broadband as essential, urging consumers to leverage competitive deals and switch to providers that offer better services.
