An abusive husband who killed his wife in a violent knife attack while their children were asleep has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 21 years.
Mompati Dodo Isaacs, 39, murdered 33-year-old Keotshepile Naso Isaacs at their residence in North Berwick, East Lothian, on January 1, 2024. He repeatedly stabbed her in the head and neck during a sustained assault on New Year’s Day.
Isaacs was convicted of the murder in September after a trial at the High Court in Edinburgh. During sentencing, Judge Lady Ross condemned his actions, stating that he had cruelly ended Naso’s life and inflicted unimaginable pain and fear on her.
The judge highlighted that the couple’s children and another family member were present in the house at the time of the attack. She emphasized the brutality of the crime, noting that Isaacs had mercilessly used a knife against his defenseless wife in their own home.
Isaacs had relocated to Scotland from Botswana with his wife several years ago. Naso, described as a caring support worker, was mourned by her family, including their three young children who were deprived of her love and care.
During the trial, Isaacs claimed his wife’s behavior and his mental health issues had provoked his actions. However, the jury rejected his plea of diminished responsibility and found him guilty of murder.
Isaacs, appearing via videolink from prison, remained remorseful and baffled by his actions during the court hearing. His lawyer stressed his client’s recognition of the profound impact his actions had on his children and extended family.
The sentencing judge imposed a life imprisonment sentence, stating it was the only appropriate punishment for the heinous crime committed by Isaacs. The defendant, clad in prison attire, sat with bowed head throughout the proceedings.
