“Nova Scotia Author Donates $300K to Save Libraries”

Published:

Nova Scotia writer Rachel Reid has contributed $300,000 to the Annapolis Valley Regional Library following the announcement of the impending closure of five branches. Expressing her motivation for the donation, Reid stated in an interview with CBC News that as a successful author in Nova Scotia, she believes in utilizing her success for a positive cause.

To address the closure, the Annapolis Valley Regional Library decided to allocate $80,000 from its reserve funds to keep the branches operational until September 30. Despite securing partial funding from municipalities earlier in the year, an additional $200,000 was required to sustain the libraries in Hantsport, Kentville, Lawrencetown, Port Williams, and Middleton until the end of the 2026-27 fiscal year.

Acknowledging Reid’s generous contribution as one of the largest private donations in the library’s history, CEO Julia Merritt expressed gratitude for the investment in the libraries and the community they serve. The library highlighted that the donation from Reid will have a significant impact on their ability to provide reading, learning, and connection opportunities across the region.

Reid emphasized the importance of properly funding libraries as essential services that play a crucial role in her journey as an author. Reflecting on her childhood experiences at the Bedford library and the influence it had on her writing career, Reid emphasized the vital role libraries play beyond offering free books and resources.

While emphasizing that private contributions cannot replace government funding, Reid hopes her donation will raise awareness about the funding challenges faced by public libraries. The library affirmed its commitment to collaborating with the government to ensure continued access to robust public library services across the region.

As part of the donation, Reid will participate in a special public event celebrating libraries, reading, and community next month. The library plans to share further details on the event in the coming week.
