The drone, a DJI T100, is presently the largest spray drone in Canada with a 100-liter tank for pesticide spraying, a practice authorized by the federal government in June. During a demonstration, the drone was filled with water as it maneuvered across the fields. Roberts emphasized that Prairie farmers, like himself, continually embrace technological advancements to enhance crop production. Despite this, Canada lags behind countries such as the U.S., China, Brazil, Japan, and Australia in allowing drone spraying due to regulatory delays. Experts cite issues like bureaucratic hurdles, insufficient infrastructure, and labor shortages as hindrances to Canada’s food export growth compared to its global counterparts.
According to Evan Fraser from the Arrell Food Institute at the University of Guelph, Canada’s food exports have not kept pace with the expanding global food trade. A recent analysis by RBC highlighted a decline in Canada’s market share, signaling the need for improvements to remain competitive. Roberts acknowledged that regulatory changes, like the rebranding of Canada’s pesticide regulator, show promise but need practical implementation to benefit farmers directly.
Regarding infrastructure challenges, Roberts pointed out the vital role of railways in transporting crops to export markets and highlighted the impacts of delays on farm operations. Evan Shout, a farm consultant, echoed concerns about infrastructure limitations and labor shortages affecting farming activities, emphasizing the need for skilled workers to operate advanced farming equipment effectively.
