“Alex Gibney’s ‘Musk’ Exposes Elon Musk’s Unchecked Influence”

Published:

Alex Gibney’s extensive documentary “Musk,” delving into the life of tech magnate Elon Musk, presents a grim and alarming narrative, akin to the impactful climate change documentary “An Inconvenient Truth.” Unlike the latter, “Musk” lacks a hopeful resolution, instead painting a picture of Musk’s rise from entrepreneur to a figure shaping political landscapes, including dismantling USAID and contemplating unusual survival strategies like establishing a baby farm and commune.

Interviewed prior to the film’s screening at the Toronto International Film Festival, Gibney shared his experience fielding defamation threats from Musk, who labeled him negatively. The documentary’s runtime expanded to nearly four hours when Musk aligned with President Donald Trump, prompting HBO to enhance the project to capture the gravity of Musk’s influence on global affairs.

Despite the film’s imminent release in North America, concerns arose regarding international distribution due to potential political pressures. The uncertain landscape, including Paramount’s ownership by a Trump-affiliated entity, added to Gibney’s apprehension about the documentary’s streaming fate.

Following the interview, Gibney revealed ongoing discussions for international theatrical releases, with plans for a streaming debut in early 2027. Despite the bleak tone of the documentary, Gibney hopes for a more nuanced reception, emphasizing that the film serves as a cautionary tale rather than a eulogy.

Initially a supporter of Musk, Gibney’s perspective shifted during the documentary’s production, as Musk and his inner circle declined interviews. To counter this, an AI-avatar narrates portions of the film using Musk’s own words, offering a critical lens on his actions and influence, particularly in government affairs.

The documentary delves into Musk’s controversial involvement in U.S. politics, with accusations of undermining federal institutions and engaging in cryptic activities during the 2024 presidential election. Gibney highlights Musk’s perceived manipulation of power and the public’s complicity in enabling his unchecked authority, urging viewers to critically assess Musk’s actions beyond his public persona as a tech innovator.
