Actor and advocate for disability rights, RJ Mitte, who portrayed a character with cerebral palsy on the acclaimed series “Breaking Bad,” passed away at the age of 34 on Monday, as confirmed by authorities and his representatives. Cameron County Justice of the Peace Cyndi Hinojosa stated that Mitte was pronounced dead around 1:30 p.m. at his residence in Brownsville, Texas. The cause of death remains undisclosed pending an autopsy.
Mitte, known for his role as Walter White Jr., the son of Bryan Cranston’s character on the popular AMC show, shared in an interview with The Associated Press in 2014 that his personal experiences with cerebral palsy, including challenges with physical therapy, family dynamics, and substantial medical expenses, enhanced his performance on the show.
Originally from Jackson, Mississippi, Mitte ventured into acting in Los Angeles in 2006, securing minor roles in sitcoms before landing his breakthrough role on “Breaking Bad” in 2007 at a young age. The show, which aired from 2008 to 2013, garnered critical acclaim, with Mitte’s portrayal praised for its authenticity and contribution to raising awareness about disabilities and inclusivity.
In a statement following his passing, Mitte’s representatives highlighted his commitment to challenging stereotypes and advocating for greater representation within the entertainment industry. Co-star Bryan Cranston fondly remembered Mitte as a talented actor who brought a sense of joy and dedication to his work on and off the set.
Mitte’s career extended beyond “Breaking Bad,” with appearances in television series like “Switched at Birth” and “Guardians of Justice.” Additionally, he delved into producing independent films. Notably, Mitte actively supported organizations such as United Cerebral Palsy and Shriners Children’s as an ambassador and established the Mitte Foundation, dedicated to supporting charitable causes and community initiatives related to disabilities.
