Nigeria’s Federal Road Safety Corps has released new images from the scene of a tragic accident involving British heavyweight boxer Anthony Joshua. The incident, which claimed the lives of two individuals, occurred on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway. Joshua was hospitalized after being rescued from the SUV wreckage following a tire blowout that caused the vehicle to collide with a stationary lorry.
Reports indicate that the crash occurred due to the SUV losing control and hitting the lorry. The Ogun State police are conducting an investigation into the matter, while the FRSC has provided updates on the incident.
The FRSC shared previously unseen images of the damaged SUV and the truck involved in the collision. The photos show officials at the scene alongside witnesses, with the truck’s rear section taped off.
According to the FRSC statement, the crash occurred on December 29 along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway. The accident involved a Lexus Jeep carrying Anthony Joshua and a stationary truck. Two individuals lost their lives, one sustained injuries, and Joshua escaped with minor injuries.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the Lexus Jeep was speeding and lost control while overtaking, leading to the collision with the truck. The FRSC emphasized the dangers of excessive speed and reckless overtaking on Nigerian roads, urging motorists to prioritize safety.
The FRSC extended condolences to the families of the deceased and wished Joshua a speedy recovery. The public was reminded to adhere to traffic regulations and exercise caution, especially during the festive season.
Ogun State authorities reported that the two deceased individuals were foreign nationals. Joshua, who has not publicly commented on the incident, remains hospitalized with his location undisclosed.
