Stellantis and Volkswagen, the leading auto companies in Europe, showcased their increasing trust in electric vehicles at the Paris auto show, drawing inspiration from their Chinese counterparts who are reshaping the domestic market.
Both companies are revamping their strategies to tackle the rising competition from Chinese rivals in Europe. Stellantis, which includes popular brands like Citroen, Peugeot, Opel, and Fiat, is leveraging its partnerships with Leapmotor and Dongfeng to analyze Chinese technological advancements, according to CEO Antonio Filosa.
Filosa emphasized the importance of collaboration and knowledge-sharing to enhance competitiveness. Stellantis recently formed production alliances with Leapmotor and plans to establish another with Dongfeng to comply with European manufacturing regulations.
The shift towards electric vehicles in Europe has gained momentum, driven by factors such as fuel price hikes and the availability of more affordable models from Volkswagen and Stellantis. These companies are striving to retain their market positions against fast-expanding Chinese competitors expanding globally.
Volkswagen’s transformation has also been influenced by China, referred to as a crucial industry hub by CEO Oliver Blume. However, the impact in Europe remains somewhat indirect, with Volkswagen’s collaboration with Xpeng primarily focusing on the Chinese market.
While Volkswagen has concentrated on partnerships in China, Stellantis’ successful alliance with Leapmotor is setting the pace in Europe. Analysts suggest that European automakers must acknowledge China’s educational role in the industry, marking a shift from the historical dynamic of knowledge transfer between the two regions.
