The former leader of the Navy has raised concerns about the potential for the conflict between Russia and Ukraine to escalate into a nuclear crisis.
Admiral Lord West, the ex-First Sea Lord, delivered the stark warning, stating that Britain is effectively engaged in hostilities with Moscow. He highlighted the concept of “grey zone warfare,” which encompasses hostile actions that do not fit the traditional definition of armed conflict, such as Russian interference with undersea cables and drone trespassing along Nato’s eastern borders.
Speaking on the Lord Speaker’s podcast, Lord West expressed difficulty in envisioning a resolution to the conflict, emphasizing the undesirability of a full-scale war between Nato and Russia. He emphasized the risks associated with Russia potentially resorting to nuclear weapons if faced with defeat.
Former Nato General Secretary Lord Robertson, who conducted an extensive review of the nation’s defense capabilities, criticized Britain for being inadequately prepared to counter the threats posed by adversaries. Previous warnings from experts have highlighted Russia’s increasing hostilities towards the UK, including cyberattacks, aerial reconnaissance missions, arson attacks, and submarine intrusions.
Sir Ken McCallum, the director of MI5, recently stated that Russia is actively seeking to sow chaos and destruction globally, relying on disposable proxies following the expulsion of its operatives from European embassies.
Lord Robertson reiterated concerns on the podcast, underscoring the nation’s vulnerability to cyber warfare and sabotage orchestrated by the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence agency. He also pointed out that Vladimir Putin’s ambitions extend beyond territorial conquest in eastern Ukraine, raising alarms in neighboring countries like Moldova and Azerbaijan.
Supporting President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian government is crucial to dissuading Vladimir Putin from further aggression, Lord Robertson emphasized. He stressed the importance of demonstrating to Putin that his current approach is unsustainable, as he is only making minor territorial gains at present.
