“Nepal Military Rescuers Reach Flood-Hit Region”

Published:

Nepal’s military rescuers reached an area affected by a sudden flood on Monday. Helicopters and soldiers delivered food and aid to the Budhi Gandaki river region in north central Nepal, evacuating residents and tourists. Five individuals are missing, with no reported deaths. Most people were able to move to higher ground due to early warnings before the flood struck.

The flood, triggered by a landslide near Chumchure village, damaged five bridges, three hydropower plant sites, and numerous homes and farms. The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority of Nepal has relocated 95 individuals, including nine foreigners, to nearby towns.

Popular trekking routes in the flood-affected area attract many hikers, especially in October. Trucks transport essential supplies to accessible locations, while army helicopters deliver aid to remote mountain villages.

The Budhi Gandaki River meets the Trishuli River and is an important waterway near Kathmandu. Videos circulating on social media depict buildings being washed away by the swollen river amid towering mountains. The impact on the region’s small villages remains uncertain.

Nepal continues to recover from a catastrophic flood along the Nepal-China border in August, which claimed over 1,400 lives and left many missing. Prime Minister Balendra Shah’s office announced the conclusion of search and rescue operations on October 5, shifting focus to infrastructure repair.
