The Simon Fraser University Pipe Band has achieved global success once again. After a 17-year gap, the band clinched the Grade 1 global title at the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, Scotland. This victory marks the band’s seventh championship win under the leadership of Pipe Major Alan Bevan, who described it as a significant milestone.

According to Glasgow Life, the charity hosting the competition, the band delivered an outstanding performance that secured them the top spot. Bevan emphasized the importance of winning the championship, highlighting its status as the ultimate prize in the world of pipe bands.

This win is particularly notable as it is the first time since 2010 that a non-U.K. band has claimed the world championship, as confirmed by Glasgow Life. The competition featured over 200 bands from 14 countries, including participants from Australia, New Zealand, Oman, and Malaysia.

Andrew Lee, a bagpiper in the Simon Fraser University Pipe Band, expressed his joy at the long-awaited victory, noting the years of close calls and hard work leading up to this achievement. Lee, who has been part of the band for 21 years, emphasized the honor and happiness felt by the entire group in winning the world championships.

Preparations for the competition began in the fall, with Bevan highlighting the band’s focus on expressive performances that set them apart. The band’s dynamic drum section and energetic delivery have consistently garnered cheers from the audience. Bevan remarked on the band’s sense of readiness and peak performance during this year’s competition.

Judged based on four performances over two days, the band comprises individuals from diverse backgrounds, including teachers, lawyers, students, and even a bagpipe maker like Lee. Bevan praised the strong piping community in British Columbia and the Pacific Northwest, noting the presence of excellent teachers and youth programs for aspiring musicians.
