Australia’s interim captain, Steve Smith, has spoken out following a tense confrontation with England’s fast bowler, Jofra Archer, in the final session at the Gabba. With the tourists needing to dismiss the Aussies for under 64 runs, Smith led his team to victory by hitting the winning runs for the second consecutive Test.
Smith entered the crease when Australia was 41-2 and swiftly propelled his team to triumph, scoring a remarkable 23 runs off just nine deliveries. During this time, he smashed two massive sixes and two fours, dominating Archer who conceded 15 runs from five deliveries.
The heated exchange between Smith and Archer occurred during an intense over at the Gabba, with Archer visibly frustrated after being hit for a boundary by Smith. Undeterred, Smith showcased his prowess by sending Archer to the deep fine leg and over the boundary for a six, leaving England’s bowlers reeling from the onslaught.
In the subsequent over, Smith struck another six to secure the victory, giving Australia a commanding 2-0 lead as they head into the next Test in Adelaide.
When asked about the on-field altercation with Archer, Smith remarked, “That stays on the field. It was good banter. He’s a good competitor and comes hard at you so it was good fun.” The incident highlighted Archer’s frustration, as he struggled with the pink ball throughout the match.
England’s bowling attack, not performing at their peak as seen on day one in Perth, failed to contain Australia. The hosts were set a target of 334 to chase down, which they achieved comfortably with noteworthy contributions from various players.
Heading into the third Test in Adelaide, England faces the pressure of needing a win to stay in contention for the Ashes, with Australia poised to retain the trophy if England falters. The upcoming Test is scheduled to commence on December 17.
The Ashes series, starting on November 21, will be broadcast live on TNT Sports via discovery+ or Prime Video’s TNT Sports channel for fans to follow the England-Australia cricket battle.
