“DWP Issues £25 Cold Weather Payments to 500K+ Homes”

Published:

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has activated Cold Weather Payments in close to 250 postcode regions across England and Wales. This action coincides with an array of winter weather alerts issued by the Met Office for the upcoming week. More than 500,000 households are set to benefit from these payments, receiving £25 each to assist with heating expenses.

The current round of payments has been initiated in a total of 246 postcode areas, including locations such as Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, as well as parts of Wales and Northern Ireland. The list of postcodes qualifying for the payments has been unveiled today.

Cold Weather Payments are allocated to eligible individuals in England and Wales who receive various benefits. While a similar program exists in Northern Ireland, Scotland’s heating bill support is provided annually rather than tied to specific cold periods.

As of now, £25 payments have been activated for 697 postcode areas this winter, with 18 districts receiving two payments due to prolonged cold conditions. The latest payments are expected to reach approximately 532,000 households, with Greater Manchester alone accounting for around 336,000 recipients. The total expenditure for today’s Cold Weather Payments is estimated at £13.3 million.

In England and Wales, a payment trigger occurs when an area is forecasted to experience subzero temperatures for seven consecutive days. Weather experts are anticipating a cold spell leading into the New Year, with frosty conditions projected across many regions.

Approximately 3.9 million individuals are eligible for Cold Weather Payments under the DWP scheme, with 1.2 million of them receiving Pensions Credit. Those receiving benefits such as Pension Credit, Income Support, JSA, ESA, Universal Credit, and Support for Mortgage Interest may qualify for the Cold Weather Payment, subject to specific criteria.

Recipients will receive £25 directly into their bank accounts within 14 working days, identified by a payment reference containing their National Insurance number followed by ‘DWP CWP’. Applications for this payment are not required.

The activation of Cold Weather Payments has been prompted by various weather stations, including Rochdale, Rostherne, Hurn, Carlisle, Little Rissington, Keele, Llysdinam, Wittering, Shawbury, and Katesbridge in Northern Ireland.
