British authorities have dispatched police officers to India in pursuit of a fugitive suspect accused of murdering his wife in the United Kingdom. The victim, Harshita Brella, aged 24, was strangled at her residence in Northamptonshire and later discovered in a Vauxhall Corsa in Ilford, East London, in November last year. Prior to her tragic death, Harshita had sought assistance from law enforcement, reporting abuse at the hands of her husband, Pankaj Lamba.
In an effort to support the ongoing investigation, detectives traveled to India in July to meet with Harshita’s family and facilitate the return of her personal belongings, while Indian authorities continue their search for Lamba. Detective Superintendent Johnny Campbell expressed condolences to the bereaved family on the anniversary of Harshita’s passing, emphasizing the dedication to seeking justice for her.
Meanwhile, the Independent Office for Police Conduct is scrutinizing the interactions between Northamptonshire Police and the deceased woman. According to UK police findings, Harshita was strangled in Corby on November 10 and her remains were transported to Ilford the following day. Lamba, aged 23, departed for India from Heathrow Airport three days before Harshita’s body was located. Surveillance footage captured Lamba withdrawing funds from an ATM in Gurugram in March, as reported by local media.
Harshita’s family has expressed frustration with the lack of information provided by Northamptonshire Police and has initiated legal action in the High Court in Delhi, urging the Indian government to intervene. Reflecting on the case, Detective Superintendent Campbell highlighted the commencement of criminal proceedings against Lamba and affirmed the commitment to pursuing justice for Harshita.
In a poignant interview, Harshita’s mother, Sudesh Kumari, recounted her daughter’s distressing experiences prior to her demise, recalling Harshita’s resolve to break free from an abusive relationship. Kumari described her daughter as a gentle soul who had confided in her about the challenges she faced, expressing concerns for her safety.
