The Prime Minister has made a strong commitment to not disappoint future generations as he revealed a set of agreements aimed at enhancing the “clean energy revolution.”
Keir Starmer is scheduled to meet with global leaders at COP 30 in Belem, Brazil this Thursday, where he will emphasize the potential of clean energy as a key economic opportunity in the 21st century, capable of bringing substantial job opportunities and economic growth.
His address coincides with the announcement of various partnerships between government officials and companies such as ScottishPower, JERA Nex bp, EnBW, and Statera Energy.
Prior to his speech, the Prime Minister highlighted that the UK has attracted £50 billion in investments in clean energy industries over the past year, with a projected creation of 800,000 jobs by the end of the decade.
He stated, “Our mission to drive the clean power revolution is progressing rapidly – ensuring energy security, reducing bills permanently, and fostering growth in communities throughout the UK.”
He added, “By generating skilled, well-paid jobs in locations like Great Yarmouth, Belfast, and Greater Manchester, we are actively renewing the nation, advocating for the interests of workers across the country.”
The recent agreements include a funding of over £100 million to Belfast Harbour to support the development of two significant offshore wind farms in the Irish Sea. Additionally, Carrington in Greater Manchester will host one of the largest battery facilities in the UK.
Further investments are directed towards the Port of East Anglia, with £15 million allocated for constructing a new operations and maintenance center as part of a broader £28 million upgrade. Scottish Power is also backing the East Anglia TWO windfarm in the North Sea. Moreover, Scottish Power and Peel Ports Group are investing £10 million to enhance the port’s Northern Terminal for future offshore wind projects, creating an estimated 100 jobs.
In a resolute affirmation of the UK’s energy commitments, Energy Secretary Ed Miliband stated, “The UK’s message at COP30 is clear: collaborative efforts to combat climate change pave the way for good jobs, energy security, and economic progress – let’s proceed with determination.”
Earlier this week, the Prime Minister expressed to sixth formers his motivation to attend COP30 due to the “undeniable obligation we have to protect the planet for future generations, as well as the hundreds of thousands of jobs in the country.”
