“UK’s Copper Landline Era Ends: Digital Voice Transition by 2027”

Published:

The era of traditional copper landlines that run above UK streets is coming to an end. By January 2027, the nationwide shift to “Digital Voice” services will phase out the old copper-wire phone network.

Once this transition takes effect, households will make calls through their broadband connections. This change represents a significant shift in UK communications, with BT’s Openreach network implementing the “Stop Sell” program to hasten the move away from outdated infrastructure.

Under these regulations, providers like BT, Sky, Plusnet, and TalkTalk will no longer offer new copper-based broadband and phone services in affected areas. Openreach has already introduced Stop Sell notifications in numerous parts of the UK, with a further expansion now impacting 238 exchange locations and around 1.69 million premises.

After the implementation of these changes, customers seeking to upgrade, switch, or sign up for new services will need to transition to full fiber broadband and digital phone services instead of the legacy copper network.

Openreach clarified that “Stop Sell” is activated when a majority (75%) of premises connected to a specific exchange can access ultrafast Full Fibre. This move aims to shift customers onto more advanced and reliable technologies as the old copper infrastructure diminishes.

By early June, Stop Sell rules will apply to 1,432 exchanges nationwide, affecting approximately 14.2 million properties. James Lilley, Openreach’s Managed Customer Migrations Director, emphasized that the Stop Sell program is critical in driving the UK toward a modern full fiber future.

Digital Voice is BT’s advanced home phone service that connects homes via broadband technology. It offers modern features such as Multi Call, three-way calling for conference calls, and call diversion to any phone number, including mobile phones. Upgrading to Digital Voice should enhance call quality, though a compatible Digital Home phone is required.

For most households, transitioning to Digital Voice will not alter their phone usage habits. The cost of the new Digital Voice and broadband service is bundled in a single package price, with no additional charge for Digital Voice.
