Inter Milan’s goalkeeper, Josep Martinez, was involved in a tragic incident where he accidentally hit and killed an 81-year-old man while driving to training. The man, who was on an electric wheelchair, reportedly experienced a medical problem just before the accident, preventing him from avoiding the collision.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning in Fenegro, near Inter’s training facility. Martinez, 27, stopped immediately after the accident and provided assistance, although the elderly man was pronounced dead at the scene despite medical intervention.
Italian authorities are conducting an investigation into the matter, leading Inter to cancel manager Cristian Chivu’s press conference. Martinez, the team’s backup goalkeeper, was expected to be on the bench for the upcoming match against Fiorentina.
Since joining Inter in 2024 from Genoa, Martinez has made 12 appearances for the club. The Spaniard, who started his career at Las Palmas and Barcelona’s La Masia academy, played for RB Leipzig before moving to Genoa.
Despite the recent tragedy, Martinez participated in a friendly match against Atletico Madrid during the international break. It remains uncertain how the player, club, and authorities will proceed regarding his involvement in upcoming matches.
