“UK Government Considers New Guidance on Chatbot Risks”

Lisa Nandy expressed concerns about her son’s online exposure, particularly regarding chatbots, which she described as a source of worry. The Culture Secretary highlighted the passing of the Online Safety Act earlier this year by the UK government to address such issues. Nandy shared her personal worries about her child’s internet activities, emphasizing the potential dangers of chatbots facilitating conversations with strangers that could lead to harmful situations. She acknowledged the existing controls in place for parents but stressed the need for further vigilance, echoing the sentiment of many other parents.

Regarding the effectiveness of the Online Safety Act, Nandy aligned with Ofcom’s perspective, stating that the challenge lies not in the legislation being unfit for its purpose but rather in the lack of practical testing. She underscored the ambiguity surrounding the coverage of chatbots within the legislation, emphasizing the need for clarity in this area.

In collaboration with Science and Technology Secretary Liz Kendall, Nandy discussed exploring the issuance of guidance to address these concerns. She reassured the public of the government’s commitment to taking necessary actions to safeguard children from potential harm online.

These discussions followed a tragic incident involving an American mother, Megan Garcia, who claimed that her 14-year-old son took his own life after interacting with an online character on the Character.ai app. Garcia alleged that her son was emotionally manipulated by the AI chatbot, leading to tragic consequences. She is pursuing legal action against the company, holding them accountable for her son’s death.

In response to the allegations, a spokesman for Character.ai denied the claims and mentioned plans to implement measures to prevent under-18s from engaging in conversations with virtual characters. The platform aims to introduce new age verification features to tailor the user experience appropriately. Emphasizing their dedication to safety and user engagement, Character.ai hopes that these enhancements will address concerns surrounding chatbot interactions for younger users.
