“Rising Food Prices: The Costly Truth Behind Supermarket Own-Brand Alternatives”

Published:

The continuous rise in food prices over recent years due to the ongoing cost of living crisis has become a common concern for consumers. Despite this awareness, the sight of increased prices on favorite products at supermarkets remains disheartening for many individuals.

In an attempt to manage expenses, many people have opted for supermarket own-brand basic ranges over well-known brands. However, a recent visit to Marks & Spencer revealed that even this cost-saving strategy may not always be effective. While M&S is known for its upscale image, it typically offered some reasonably priced everyday items.

For instance, M&S’ Classic Mayonnaise, priced at £1.50 for a 500ml tub, was only slightly more expensive than similar products from competitors like Sainsbury’s and Tesco. However, the introduction of the new Only… Ingredients range at M&S revealed a significant price disparity, particularly with the Olive Oil Mayonnaise retailing at £4.50 for a 250g tub, featuring only six ingredients.

The product description highlighted the use of olive oil along with five other basic ingredients, emphasizing a rich flavor profile. Despite the simplified ingredient list, the price of the Olive Oil Mayonnaise was considerably higher compared to the Classic variant, reflecting the current trend of escalating olive oil prices impacting consumer goods.

While the Olive Oil Mayonnaise stands out as a premium offering within the Only… Ingredients range, other products in the line maintain more competitive pricing. M&S’ commitment to minimal ingredients in products aligns with the trend towards simplicity in food choices, but the higher costs associated with certain items may pose a challenge for budget-conscious consumers.

The broader issue of rising olive oil prices can be attributed to global factors affecting supply and demand, as well as specific challenges in the UK market. Factors such as reduced global supply, supply chain disruptions, and currency fluctuations contribute to the observed price increases in olive oil products.
