“British Gas Expert Shares 97p Trick to Fix Radiator Cold Spots”

Published:

An expert from British Gas has shared tips on how to resolve cold spots in radiators, with a low-cost tool priced at only 97p.

If you notice cold spots at the top of your radiator or hear gurgling noises while it heats up slowly, bleeding the radiator could be the solution. This simple fix requires a radiator key, available for purchase for as little as 97p at Screwfix, to release trapped air.

Prior to bleeding the radiator, it’s essential to turn off the heating system, as advised by Peter Knowles, a technical repair engineer at British Gas. Ensure the radiator has completely cooled down to prevent any burns from hot water.

Prepare by having an old towel and a container handy to catch the water. Once ready, locate the small valve on the radiator and use the key to turn it anti-clockwise. Peter suggested opening the valve slightly until you hear a hissing sound, indicating trapped air escaping. When water starts to come out, collect it in the container, then tighten the valve and repeat the process for other radiators.

Caution is advised not to over-bleed the radiator, as it could reduce boiler pressure. If issues persist after bleeding, it’s recommended to seek assistance from a Gas Safe registered engineer.

Another energy-saving tip comes from British Gas smart energy engineer Jessica Rawstron, who suggests leaving the oven door open after cooking to utilize the residual heat, helping to keep the house warm.

Energy bills have recently increased, with the average household paying around £1,758 annually for gas and electricity through direct debit. While the price cap regulates unit rates and standing charges, the total bill varies based on individual energy consumption.

For those not on a fixed energy tariff, the price cap for pre-payment meter users is now £1,711 per year, and for bill payment upon receipt, it stands at £1,894 annually.
