As a parent in Winnipeg, Morgan Klachefsky shared her experience dealing with her son Simon’s severe cashew and pistachio allergy. The frightening incident occurred when Simon was just 18 months old, and he had an anaphylactic reaction after consuming a cashew, leading to a rush to the Winnipeg HSC Children’s Emergency Department.
Following the incident, Morgan embarked on a mission to educate herself and those around Simon about managing his allergies. However, this newfound knowledge also brought overwhelming fear, making it challenging for her to trust anyone besides herself and her husband with Simon’s care.
Over time, as Simon grew more confident and independent, Morgan realized the need to address her own mental health and controlling behavior. She gradually learned to trust other parents and allow Simon more freedom, albeit with clear guidelines on his allergies and EpiPen usage.
As Simon matured, Morgan began teaching him to take responsibility for his own safety, including reading labels and administering an EpiPen. While the journey towards trusting others was challenging, she acknowledged the importance of letting go and allowing Simon to experience life while being prepared and cautious.
Despite initial apprehension, Simon’s desire to attend sleepaway camp presented a significant test for Morgan. With careful planning, trust in his friends, and structured safety protocols, Simon successfully navigated the camp experience. This milestone marked a significant step forward in their journey of letting go, building resilience, and embracing new adventures.
As they continue to navigate Simon’s allergies and growing independence, Morgan remains vigilant yet hopeful, understanding that letting go gradually and seeking support are essential components of their shared journey.
