“Canadian Women Seek Endometriosis Treatment Abroad”

Published:

Noelle Menu, aged 37, started experiencing intense pain when she decided to have children with her husband at the age of 26. The pain, which began after she stopped taking her long-term birth control, severely impacted her life. Despite facing delays in diagnosis, undergoing a hysterectomy, and enduring lengthy waitlists for specialist care, the pain persisted, leading her to seek treatment at EndoGlobal in Tijuana, Mexico, at a cost of $35,000.

Many Canadian women with endometriosis are dissatisfied with the healthcare system, citing issues of misdiagnosis and long wait times. Endometriosis, affecting one in 10 women, involves tissue similar to uterine lining spreading in the body, causing inflammation and severe pain during menstruation. Diagnosis in Canada can take up to five years, with further delays in seeing specialists and undergoing surgery.

Gender bias and societal taboos contribute to the delayed treatment of endometriosis, with symptoms often dismissed as normal female experiences. Vanessa Papiernik, a 42-year-old veterinarian, waited 30 years for an endometriosis diagnosis after enduring debilitating pain and facing a cancer scare. She opted for treatment at EndoGlobal after long waits for specialist care in Canada.

Dr. Jorge Zavala, a co-founder of EndoGlobal, highlighted the lack of awareness among doctors about endometriosis, resulting in delayed diagnoses. The complexity of the condition necessitates a multidisciplinary approach to care, including psychologists and physiotherapists. The House of Commons recommended developing a national action plan to address gaps in endometriosis awareness and treatment.

In response, the Canadian government pledged to gather data on endometriosis and invest in research. Many women, including Menu, have sought treatment outside of Canada due to long wait times and inadequate care, emphasizing the urgent need for improved endometriosis management in the country.
