“Coach Stoney Urges Canadian Team to Enhance Finishing”

Published:

Head coach Casey Stoney is emphasizing the need for the Canadian team to be more clinical in their finishing as they prepare to take on Denmark in a women’s soccer rematch. The upcoming match will see the 9th-ranked Canadians hosting the 12th-ranked Danish team at Toronto’s BMO Field. In the previous friendly match between the two teams in Montreal, Olivia Smith’s late goal secured a 1-1 draw.

Stoney expressed the importance of converting scoring opportunities efficiently, highlighting the team’s dominance in possession and shot attempts in the last game. Despite controlling the game, Canada struggled to break down Denmark’s defense until Smith’s crucial goal in the 84th minute.

Looking ahead to the rematch, Stoney is urging her players to exhibit more patience and precision in the attacking third. She emphasized the need for better decision-making and execution in the final phase of play to capitalize on scoring chances effectively.

The upcoming game against Denmark serves as a significant test for Canada as they prepare for the CONCACAF W Championship quarterfinal against Panama. Stoney, who is yet to secure a victory against a top-15 opponent since taking over as head coach in January 2025, sees the Denmark fixtures as vital preparation for the upcoming tournament.

With the Canadian team aiming for a victory, midfielder Marie-Yasmine Alidou emphasized the importance of facing a high-ranked team like Denmark. The match also marks a milestone for left back Allysha Chapman, who is set to make her 100th and final international appearance for Canada.

In head coach Stoney’s perspective, improving efficiency in the attacking third will be a key focus for the team as they aim for a positive result against Denmark in the upcoming rematch.
