Rio Ferdinand Questions Liverpool’s Decision to Sell Diaz; Backs Bayern Move

Published:

Rio Ferdinand has expressed disapproval of Liverpool’s choice to sell Luis Diaz during the summer transfer window. He firmly believes that Cody Gakpo does not surpass the Colombian in skill. Diaz secured a move to Bayern Munich for a potential sum of £65.5m and has excelled since joining the Bundesliga giants.

Diaz made an immediate impact by scoring the winning goal on his debut against VfB Stuttgart, helping Bayern clinch the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup. With seven goals and four assists in 13 appearances, the 28-year-old has been pivotal for Bayern, who maintain a flawless winning streak this season.

In contrast, Liverpool, despite significant spending of £450m in the transfer window, has struggled and dropped to seventh in the Premier League after four consecutive defeats. Lagging behind Arsenal by seven points, Liverpool’s title defense seems bleak.

Both Diaz and Gakpo played key roles in Liverpool’s Premier League triumph last season. Diaz shifted from the left flank to a central role as the season progressed, while Gakpo contributed 18 goals and six assists in 49 matches. Gakpo has continued his form this season with four goals and three assists in 13 matches.

Ferdinand criticized Liverpool’s decision to sell Diaz, questioning if it was wise business. He believes Diaz is a top player and doubts that Gakpo is a better replacement. Liverpool parted ways with Diaz due to his desire to leave after failed contract negotiations with the club.

Sky has reduced the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle for the upcoming season, offering more than 1,400 live matches across various leagues, including at least 215 live Premier League games.
