Labour MP warns of Farage’s online safety stance

Published:

Labour MP Emily Darlington has cautioned against Nigel Farage’s stance on the Online Safety Act, warning that it could result in the accessibility of pornography to children through digital devices. Darlington, a member of the tech committee in Westminster, emphasized the importance of the bill in safeguarding children from online predators and highlighted the real-life repercussions of online abuse.

Expressing her concerns, Darlington mentioned the prevalence of catfishing among young individuals in her community, particularly pointing out its adverse effects. In an exclusive interview with The Mirror, she criticized Farage’s proposal to repeal the online safety act, stating that it could potentially expose children to explicit content at a young age.

Darlington questioned whether allowing unrestricted access to such content via smartphones and the internet was appropriate, asserting that Farage’s argument about free speech was unfounded. She stressed the significance of the Online Safety Act in protecting children and ensuring a safe online environment for all users.

Reform UK has opposed the new law, claiming it infringes on free speech and fails to adequately safeguard children. Darlington, who has dealt with online harassment incidents in the past, shared alarming accounts of catfishing, highlighting the risks associated with online interactions.

According to Darlington, a significant portion of grooming activities now occurs online, posing serious threats to vulnerable young individuals. She underscored the need to address online harms comprehensively, as they often transcend the digital realm and impact real-life situations. Requests for comments from Reform UK remained unanswered.
